The highlight of the Breakfast is the presentation of the Sarah Herring Sorin Award, named in honor of Arizona's first woman lawyer, which recognizes an AWLA member who has demonstrated support and encouragement for the advancement of women in the legal profession.
This year’s recipient is Barbara LaWall, Pima County Attorney. In 1996, Ms. LaWall became the first woman ever to be elected Pima County Attorney. Previously, she had been a Deputy County Attorney for 20 years, during which she prosecuted criminal cases as a trial lawyer; managed the Criminal Division as the Chief Criminal Deputy; and oversaw administrative, budgetary, and policy matters as Chief Deputy County Attorney.
At the Breakfast, AWLA collects donations to fund the Mary Anne Richey Scholarship, named in honor of the late Honorable Mary Anne Richey, United States District Judge for the District of Arizona, and a graduate of the James E. Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona. The Scholarship is awarded to one student each from the James E. Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona, the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at Arizona State University and the Arizona Summit Law School, based upon demonstrated commitment to public service, in amounts of $1,000 per student.
The 2016 recipients of Mary Anne Richey scholarships are Amanda Ehredt, James E. Rogers School of Law at the University of Arizona; Robin Naegele, Sandra Day O’Connor School of Law at Arizona State University; and Vanessa Silva, Arizona Summit Law School.
Contributions may be made at the Breakfast by cash, credit card, or check payable to the Judge Mary Anne Richey Scholarship, managed by the Community Foundation of Southern Arizona. Contributions are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
