ARIZONA ELECTION LAW
AND HOW TO VOTE IN A PANDEMIC

CLE OFFERED*

Presented by

KARA KARLSON, ESQ.
ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL
ARIZONA ATTORNEY GENERAL'S OFFICE

How can I get a ballot by mail?  When does it need to be returned?  Are mail in ballots even counted if the race isn’t close?  What should I do if I need language assistance?  Will I be able to vote in person?  What’s a provisional ballot?  Unfortunately, election misinformation has been on the rise, and the current COVID pandemic makes ensuring the voting public has access to reliable, accurate information about how to vote in your state is more important than ever.

Kara Karlson represents the Secretary of State and the Arizona Citizens’ Clean Election Commission. She will provide attendees with an overview of how we got here, accurate information about election law, answer your questions about the voting process, and bust some common election myths.

KARA M. KARLSON represents the Secretary of State, Arizona Clean Elections Commission, and other state agencies in election matters at trial and on appeal.  Her practice includes a wide variety of election law litigation, including constitutional and Voting Rights Act litigation, state-law based automatic recounts, election challenges, petition challenges, and other emergency election-related litigation.  In addition to trial experience, Kara has argued before the Arizona Court of Appeals and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.  Before coming to the Attorney General's office, she worked at a boutique law firm in the Phoenix area with a focus on bankruptcy litigation.  In her life before the law, she worked on staff for political committees in the 2004 and 2006 election cycles.  Kara is admitted to practice in Arizona state and federal courts as well as the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court.  Kara is an Arizona Pioneer Descendant, the proud mother of two daughters, and an enthusiastic supporter of the Arizona Women Lawyers Association, including the Mother’s Forum.
