Power, Not Just Equality: A Legal History of the Vote. This CLE session traces the Voting Rights Act's full legal arc — from the 15th Amendment through Shelby County v. Holder, Allen v. Milligan, and the Supreme Court's most recent redistricting decision, handed down just months ago — in a single, fast-paced hour. You don't need an election-law practice to benefit: the session doubles as a case study in how quickly settled constitutional doctrine can shift, and includes an interactive exercise that puts the stakes in concrete terms rather than abstract case law. Attendees will leave with a clear, current understanding of where Section 2 litigation and redistricting law stand today, and a framework for evaluating facially neutral legal rules more carefully in their own practice areas. One hour. Nine landmark cases. CLE credit included.
Jay Calhoun Zenzen is an Arizona-licensed attorney with over 20 years of civil litigation, appellate, business/corporate law, and government experience. She currently practices in the Civil Division of the Pima County Attorney's Office and is the founder of The Calhoun Law Firm PLC, where she built a practice spanning commercial litigation, appellate advocacy, and federal court work. She also served as Magistrate Pro Tem and Justice of the Peace Pro Tem, having presided over hundreds of proceedings. Jay holds a J.D. and an M.A. in Art History from the University of Cincinnati. During her two decades in courtrooms and on the bench, she has remained a committed believer in justice and fairness under the law — a conviction that animates her work both in and out of the courtroom.
