THE INTERSECTION BETWEEN FEMALE VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, BRAIN INJURY, AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE INVOLVEMENT

PRESENTED BY

SHANNA MAYS, MBA-HCA

CLE OFFERED*

This presentation will briefly explain the mechanism of brain injury sustained through domestic violence, the short and long-term impacts on a person’s cognition, physical functioning and mental health which as we are witnessing, often lead to legal issues for the victim. Shanna will briefly present ways in which the legal community, law enforcement, courts, attorneys, and probation can identify when they are working with a female suffering from the effects of brain injury caused by domestic violence, and what entities they can turn to for resources and support for their clients when they need it.

Shanna is first and foremost the parent to a child with a significant brain injury and diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. She is a Certified Brain Injury Specialist through the Brain Injury Association of America and a Certified Brain Health Coach through Amen University and has 20 years’ experience in community behavioral health, working with all age groups and populations. Shanna holds a BS in Psychology and an MBA in Health Care Administration, and is now pursuing a Master of Legal Studies concentrated in Criminal Law and Policy concurrently with a Graduate Certificate in Health Law and Ethics through the University Of Arizona James E. Rogers College Of Law. As a current academic fellow in the University Of Arizona College Of Pediatrics Maternal Child Health Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (ArizonaLEND) program, Shanna is using her unique background and skill set to address the growing number of public health issues related to brain injury in youth. These include life-long physical, psychological and emotional concerns as well as behavioral issues often leading to justice involvement. Shanna was recently recommended for a gubernatorial appointment to the Arizona Governor’s Council on Head and Spine Injuries as a parent/family council member, and serves as the Chair for the Brain Injury Alliance of Arizona professional Advisory Council’s Services for Vulnerable Populations Committee (2019-present). Shanna currently facilitates professional training to government stakeholders, justice partners and community providers, on all things brain injury and juvenile/criminal through her role as Justice Systems Program Specialist, for Arizona Complete Health.
